Mini Orange Tree - Calamondin
The Citrus calamondin, also known as the calamondin orange, has its origin in China, before it was introduced to the United States and the Philippines. In the Philippines it is now a valued part of local agriculture and is used as a natural enhancement to many dishes.
The plant produces small, round fruits comparable to a mandarin in shape and size. These fruits are acidic in taste, but soft and fragrant. It is an ornamental plant that is known for its vibrant orange fruits and its rich, shiny leaves that remain on the tree throughout the year.
The calamondin shrub or tree requires well-draining soil and lots of sunlight. Although it is drought-tolerant, it prefers regular watering.
When kept as a house plant, it needs a lot of light and the room temperature should not be too low. The plant is susceptible to aphids and can also be affected by fungal infections, so daily inspection is recommended.
